Islington

A Greater London district, and part of the Islington London Borough is Islington (/ˈɪzlɪŋtən/), England. As neighbouring districts may also be said to be in Islington, this gave rise to some confusion. Grew as a village of Middlesex that was sprawling along the Great North Road line and has provided the modern borough name, was Islington.

By the Saxons named originally (1005) Giseldone, then Gislandune (1062), was Islington. Islington was in medieval times just one of many manors that are small thereabouts, along with Hey-bury, Neweton Berewe, or Bernersbury, and Canonesbury (Canonbury, Highbury, and Barnsbury - names first recorded in the 13th and 14th centuries).

The former High Street of the original village of Islington is Islington High Street. Including Upper Street/Islington High Street, and much of Road of Liverpool, which one side is in Barnsbury, many whole terraces are listed. With the houses by many families becoming occupied, many of the displaced settled in Islington.

Encompassing the area found in the busy Upper Street, High Street, Southgate Road, and (former "Lower Street") Essex Road, to the east, it is an Inner London district that is residential mainly, extending to Highbury Fields from Islington's High Street. On the estates of the Bishop of London and the Dean and Chapter of St Pauls, Islington lay.

Has long supplied with water the London City, the first projects through wooden pipes drawing water from the many springs in Finsbury, that lay at its foot, was the hill on which Islington stands. In 1833 established and in Mr. Edgeworth's Academy first met on Upper Street, was the Scientific and Literary Society of Islington.

With 3,200 dwellings destroyed, the World War II aerial bombing to Islington's housing stock caused much damage. With its private houses and apartments in wards that are immediately neighbouring not far from social housing such as King's Cross and Bloomsbury to the west, Clerkenwell and Finsbury to the south, and to the north west, Highbury, and also the Old Street and De Beauvoir districts of Hackney to the north east, Islington remains a district with diverse inhabitants.
